Leprosy Mailing List – October 27,  2021

Ref.:  (LML) Local talent

From:  Joel Almeida, London and Mumbai

Dear Pieter & colleagues,

Volunteers in India came together to produce a reasonably good mapping and monitoring real time system to track COVID 19 reports.

https://www.covid19india.org/

This was for COVID, not HD. Yet, it suggests the importance of attracting and empowering top local talent. Not every bright young person in endemic countries will choose to devote all their time to fighting HD. However, if they contribute even part of their time, it can help transform outcomes.

Pre-cooked measures imposed on endemic countries tend to have disappointing outcomes and impact. That is because they sideline an important ingredient in highly effective interventions: the skill and devotion of highly talented front line staff and volunteers who are keen to improve things.

In the old days endemic countries were regarded as the limbs and affluent countries as the brains. Now it is commonplace to see people from endemic countries as the CEOs of large corporations (eg Microsoft, Google/Alphabet, Adobe etc). The world of business is interested in financial outcomes, not in maintaining old preconceptions. In HD we are interested in health outcomes.

A conscious effort to attract and finance top talent in endemic countries is likely to help improve outcomes and impact in HD.

Best,

Joel Almeida

Leprosy Mailing List – October 22,  2021

Ref.:  (LML) Leprosy in wild chimpanzees

From:  Henk Eggens, Santa Comba Dão, Portugal

Dear Pieter,

I would like to alert LML-readers on the following article in Nature:
Published: 13 October 2021

Leprosy in wild chimpanzees
Kimberley J. Hockings et al.

https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-021-03968-4

Abstract
Humans are considered as the main host for Mycobacterium leprae, the aetiological agent of leprosy, but spillover has occurred to other mammals that are now maintenance hosts, such as nine-banded armadillos and red squirrels. Although naturally acquired leprosy has also been described in captive nonhuman primates, the exact origins of infection remain unclear. Here we describe leprosy-like lesions in two wild populations of western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in Cantanhez National Park, Guinea-Bissau and Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa.
Longitudinal monitoring of both populations revealed the progression of disease symptoms compatible with advanced leprosy. Screening of faecal and necropsy samples confirmed the presence of M.leprae as the causative agent at each site and phylogenomic comparisons with other strains from humans and other animals show that the chimpanzee strains belong to different and rare genotypes (4N/O and 2F). These findings suggest that M.leprae may be circulating in more wild animals than suspected, either as a result of exposure to humans or other unknown environmental sources.

Best,

Henk Eggens

Dear Dr. Schreuder and Friends,

Warm greetings from Sasakawa Health Foundation/Sasakawa Leprosy (Hansen's Disease) Initiative in Tokyo.

We have issued WHO Goodwill Ambassador's Leprosy Bulletin NO. 105 SEPTEMBER 2021 "Human rights for all" today. In this issue, we feature:

MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR
As part of the 10-month "Don't forget leprosy" campaign that kicked off in August, I am sharing reflections on my role and how I have approached it. For this issue of the Leprosy Bulletin, I would like to explain how a focus on human rights became an important part of my efforts.  Read More

INTERVIEW - Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

We need policies that uphold human dignity
LB (Leprosy Bulletin): In the speech you contributed for the launch of this year's Global Appeal to End Stigma and Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy, you stated that "leprosy remains a neglected and stigmatized disease." What do you think can be done to change this?

MB (Michelle Bachelet): First, we need more awareness and understanding of the impact that stigma and discrimination have on the dignity and rights of persons affected by leprosy and their family members. Read more

REPORT - Geoff Warne, Chief Executive Officer, International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP)

Eliminating discriminatory laws
One of ILEP's key goals is to reduce to zero the number of countries with legislation allowing discrimination on the basis of leprosy. ILEP's database of discriminatory laws lists details of all known laws that still exist and discriminate against persons affected by leprosy and their family members. Read more

REPORT - Aarti Thakur, Program Manager (Consultant), Disabled Peoples' International (DPI)

Disability and human rights
According to the World Report on Disability (2011), an estimated one billion people, or 15% of the world's population, experience some form of disability. Moreover, this number is rising because of medical advancements, rapidly aging population, spread of chronic diseases, and conflict and disaster situations. Read more
