Alternative antibiotic regimens for leprosy?

Leprosy Mailing List – January 19th, 2010

Ref.: Alternative antibiotic regimens for leprosy?

From: Gilead L., Jerusalem, Israel

Dear Salvatore,

I would like to inquire and hear from you and other members of the LML about your experience with MDT alternative antibiotic regimens for our patients.

In the last few years I have encountered a significant number of patients refusing to take Lamprene due to its hyperpigmentation side effects as well as patients forced to withdraw from Dapsone. Do you prescribe such patients an alternative adjunct to the other MDT components or stay with a DDT (Double Drug Therapy)? Does anyone here use MDT alternatives regularly? Which alternatives and for how long? Do you have recommendations for such alternate MDT courses? Do you have any idea about their effectiveness?

Thank you,

Dr. Leon Gilead
