Leprosy Mailing List – May 20, 2013
Ref.: (LML) New Case Detection
From: Dr. Joseph Kawuma, Kampala, Uganda
Dear Peter,
The case presentation of Dr. Barreto (LML May 9, 2013) illustrates a situation that is likely to arise more often in other settings outside Brazil.
Three important issues emerge:
(i) the practice of looking for leprosy among school children (how this would be done in a cost-effective, ethical etc. way in 2013 and beyond?);
(ii) the "histamine test" ( what happened to the reasons for scaling it down in the first place?); and
(iii) (iii) the thermo-sensibility testing (there were attempts to develop a simple tool for this test which, as far as I remember, did not go into widespread use because of cost and other reasons).
Would Dr. Berreto and other LML readers give some further comments and updates on these three?
Best regards,
H Joseph Kawuma,
