Ref.: (LML) Draft WHO Leprosy Strategy 2016-2020
From: Lucia Penna, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Dear Pieter,
I am the epidemiologist of the UMDT Brazil clinical trial. This is to let you know that we are writing a final paper with its last results. This paper will focus on relapses and on disability progression.
We perceive this trial as a non-inferiority trial. Non-inferiority is allowing a negative difference set arbitrary by the researchers that may be deceiving when the results are not clearly understood. We will show the actual evidence we have by now. I would like to emphasized that there are three relapses/reinfection and, all of them, have already been reported in the published manuscripts. From that time, one more relapse has occurred, but no statistical significant difference was observed until now. We believe that this can help the decision makers.
Unfortunately, WHO did not contact any researcher from the clinical trial team or read our previous publications. As academics, we will go on working on this last paper hoping to publish soon.
Best regards
Lucia Penna
