(LML) in memoriam of Dr. Srinivasan

Leprosy Mailing List – February 15,  2016

Ref.:  (LML) in memoriam Dr. Srinivasan

From:  Robert Jerskey, California, USA

Dear Pieter,

I recently returned to the USA from a several week sojourn in India.  Looking back retrospectively, I would like to share with the readers of the LML news of the death of mentor and friend, Dr. H. Srinivasan.   He passed on at the age of 86 on December 21st,  2015 at home in Chennai, South India surrounded by several family members at his bedside.

Dr. Srinivasan’s contributions to the field of leprosy as leprologist, surgeon, mentor, and author of touchstone books (including “Corrective Surgical Procedures commonly used in Leprosy” and WHO publication “Prevention of Disabilities  in Patients with Leprosy) span several decades.

He authored/co-authored numerous studies.  I found 50 citations in Pubmed of published articles touching on nerve damage, surgical procedures, disability, and more that date back 50 years to 1966.   When I began to explore the field of leprosy in the early 1980’s I recall taking a bus ride from Madison, Wisconsin to Chicago where I found a library that kept copies of the journal “Leprosy in India”.  His article on “Quiet Nerve Paralysis” in 1982 especially struck me.

He was also the editor of that same journal---renamed in the mid 1980’s “Indian Journal of Leprosy”---from January 1990 to June 2001.

He was director of Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy, in Agra, North India, and director of Central Leprosy Teaching and Research Institute, in Chengalpattu, South India.

Dr. Srinivasan was also the recipient of the Government of India Padma Shri, a prestigious civilian award for “distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Medicine, Social Service, and Public Affairs”.

Most readers may not know that he was an accomplished author of fiction, poetry, and essays in Tamil, his native tongue.  He was also a contributing editor of a finely compiled 1328 page Tamil-English dictionary.  I am a lover of bilingual language dictionaries, and that one is a “keeper”.

One of his two daughters is visiting California with her family in April.  I am preparing a montage of photos and reminiscences to present to the family.  I invite any of the readers who might wish to share a photo or memory to respond.   One can also email me at my yahoo address below, or alternatively, by postal mail to my postal address below.

Thank you for posting this.  With kind regards to all LML readers,

Robert
