Ref: (LML) Silent neuritis. Nerve damage. Disability and deformity. Prevention and management.
From: Anthony Bryceson, Cairns, Australia
Dear Pieter,
Grace Warren has a practical mind and much experience. Her wisdom has benefitted many of us over the years.
The ball point or the paper clip is fine for detecting diminished sensation and thus enabling the diagnosis of leprosy. But nylon filaments are essential for detecting change in sensation in response to treatment, reactions and silent neuritis, and thus helping to prevent further disability.
She also has a point about vitamin B1. Working in rural Laos in 1962 I was called to a Lao military outpost because of an outbreak of paralytic beriberi. The soldiers were fed polished rice imported by Uncle Sam from Taiwan and air dropped. After lots of B1, the long term solution was to mix in locally milled rice bran destined for the pigs.
