Leprosy Mailing List – November 5, 2024
Ref.: (LML) Observations on Rapid Test Sensitivity and Reporting in Brazil
From: Laila de Laguiche, Curitiba, Brazil
Dear Pieter,
I would like to share some reflections on the recent experience with rapid diagnostic tests in Brazil.
We are encouraged by the advancements in enhancing the sensitivity of these rapid tests, and scientific progress in this area is evident. However, I remain concerned about the negative predictive value, which our researchers are actively working to improve.
My main concern lies with the terminology used: currently, negative test results are reported simply as "Negative." However, a more accurate term would be "Not Detectable."
Why is this distinction important? It has a significant impact on contact follow-up. Individuals who receive a "negative" result may not feel the need to undergo periodic retesting.
I would be interested in hearing the perspectives of my colleagues at LML on this matter.
Best Regards
Laila
