Leprosy Mailing List – June 15, 2018
Ref.: (LML) Single-dose rifampicin chemoprophylaxis
From: Marco Andrey Cipriani Frade and Clovis Lombardi, Brazil; Wolfgang Hippke, Germany
Dear Pieter,
I would like just to give my congratulations for Dr Wambier (LML, June 13, 2018) to boldly exposing the reality of the world of leprosy in the assistance and deviations in terms of truth from science in Hansenology, often based on publications distant from this reality or, at least, distant from hands in this reality.
How can we think to eliminate leprosy without improving efforts to teach leprosy to our students and also to learn leprosy without touching the patients and understanding their different realities?
By the way, for the population around the world, we have heard more about the elimination of leprosy than about what leprosy really is. And this situation has been replicated by WHO for a long time unfortunately.
So, we have to think about new strategies to change the sad reality of leprosy in many countries.
Best wishes,
Marco Andrey

Dear colleagues,
I fully agree with Prof. Wambier (13/6/18), when he said that CLINICS and THERAPEUTICS of leprosy must be taught and learned where the patients are, it means, in endemic countries, as to avoid the "philosophic papers" he mentioned.
Nevertheless, I do not agree these would be the only knowledge to be emphasized
in the formation of all health professionals; leprosy actually is a complex public health problem, so that epidemiological, psycho-social issues are as important as clinical and therapeutical ones, in order to avoid misinterpretations like "leprosy will NEVER be eliminated", which he also mentioned.

Dear friends in leprosy,
I do rarely write anything in the LML, as I am off for ten years now after the years in Africa. But having read almost all LML-letters from the beginning, that was the best phrase I have ever read about leprosy:
"Leprosy will NEVER be eliminated, my dear friends."
Carlos Gustavo Wambier, MD, PhD, State University of Ponta Grossa
Bravo, Carlos, applause !
A Bavarian saying is: You are a Bavarian by heart, hand and brain, an only after that by dialect. Thus, becoming a leprologist is by seeing, treating and loving your leprosy patients and not (only) by publications. Respect scientific progress but listen to the guys in the field.
And stay sceptical with big organisation's or state's hubris (hýbris).
Kind regards e um abraço,
Dr. Wolfgang Hippke, Dermatologist
