Dear Pieter,

I had the privilege of being invited to this, allowing me to meet many great and inspiring colleagues and persons affected by Hanseniasis.

Others are better placed to describe the generally high quality of the presentations, and the warmth of the hospitality. I want to highlight the most impressive aspect for me:

There were many young attendees.

Our Brazilian colleagues are doing something exemplary. In conversations with the younger attendees about what drew them to Hanseniasis, it was usually the example of an inspiring professional. The meeting was near the Tocantins river, which enriches life wherever it flows. So too do our Brazilian colleagues, improving all the lives they touch.

Brazil is far from elimination of ... leprosy services. Instead, they are innovating and trying every potential solution, without glossing over the size of the problem.

There is a lot to be learnt from their example.

Congratulations to the president Dr. Claudio Salgado and all those on the team.

Also, to the sponsors including the Novartis Foundation and the Sasakawa Foundation / Nippon Foundation. Their support enabled something very good and inspiring to happen, encouraging the next generation who are the budding leaders of tomorrow.

The future seems increasingly bright for the people of Brazil and other endemic countries, given this approach of continuous improvement at the front-lines. That is where science and implementation meet, impacting human lives. That is where meaningful outcomes are available.

We have reason for optimism. Congratulations and thanks to all involved.

Joel Almeida
