Ref.: (LML) Histopathological Diagnosis of Leprosy
From: Ben Naafs, Munnekeburen, the Netherlands
Dear Pieter,
It was a real pleasure to read the book: Histopathological Diagnosis of Leprosy, written by Cleverson Teixeira Soares (LML, September 4, 2021). It is a timely follow-up of the leprosy histopathological textbooks of other leading pathologists such as Dennis Ridley, Charles K. Job and David Scollard.
There have been excellent chapters in books and guides on pathology and leprosy. However, books that focus only on leprosy histopathology are scarce. The author worked for a long time with the late Raoul Fleury, one of the best leprosy pathologists, often with strong opinions. He extended this experience with new techniques and interpreted the findings against commonly accepted schools of thought.
The book is not only suitable for the pathologist but also for the clinician. It is clearly written and the clinical and histopathological photographs fit well with the text, a text based on observations and interpretation of these observation. Each chapter can be read separately because the introduction of each chapter contains the basics and then the topic of the chapter and differential diagnoses are discussed. The histopathological images have been carefully chosen to clarify the interpretation and are of high quality. The clinical pictures provided by Casio Ghidella, once a student of Diltor Opromolla and now like his teacher an excellent clinician visualizing the clinical picture for the pathologist.
This book is more than just an enchiridion, it teaches and clarifies and helps the studying reader to understand. It is worth having and digesting.
