Ref.: (LML) What is the system in which the work and solution of leprosy exists?
From: Jayashree Kunju, Bangalore, India
Dear all,
I have had very positive responses to the email I sent two days ago. I thought it is time I elaborate on what I mean as 'Systems thinking'.
As a person affected by leprosy in 1983 and cured after a few years of treatment, I have had a personal interest in seeing a world without leprosy. Pardon my impetuousness - but in my opinion, due to the long gestation period of leprosy, the global declarations of zero leprosy by 2030 happening sounds improbable. My study of the 'stickiness' of the issue of leprosy, disability and child cases, where the world is not able to find solutions for ending leprosy in the more endemic geographies has led me to believe that if we have to impact leprosy's spread and persistence, we need to shift the paradigm in which we - the world of research doctors, NGOs, government agencies, people affected, media and community exist, operate, think and act.
I believe that the easiest and most effective way we could do this is by inquiring about the systems in which we all operate, and look at aspects that we did not notice before. For example, what if what we now see is the tip of the iceberg, and the real problem is beneath that surface? What if we, the collective, do find the blind spots ( underlying behavior, responses, actions) within the existing system out of our collective inquiry , to then impact the issue with velocity? Surely, the solution to the problem does not lie in the system in which the existing work is happening. If we are to bring velocity to our milestone, we will have to rethink and shift operating from the existing system to a new one. Our inquiry may lead us to more inquiries. But we are likely to get there as we have no other choice in any case.
Thanks and regards,
Jayashree Kunju
