Ref.:  (LML) Gentian Violet in (among others) leprosy wound care

From: William Dibb, UK

Dear colleagues,

I'm doing a presentation at a History of Medicine conference in the UK soon on the Medical History of Gentian Violet. I am keen to focus some of my time on leprosy.

As you are doubtless aware, Gentian (Crystal) Violet is antibacterial and antifungal and has been in use since the late 19th Century. It's cheap, relatively safe and established for topical use.

It would be interesting to know your experiences with Gentian Violet in leprosy wound care etc.

I have seen, in India, that it is still in use in some leprosy centres.

Thanks for your input.

Leprosy Mailing List – July 16,  2025

Ref.:  (LML) Outcome International Leprosy Congress. Bali. July 2025

From: Pieter AM Schreuder, Maastricht, the Netherlands

Dear Colleagues,

Several of the LML readers participated in the Bali congress. It would be interesting if they would share their experiences or observations with the rest of us. May be their own presentation, or what was new to them, or what they took home to apply in their own project.

There must have been for example some heated discussions about so-called 'relapsed' reversal reactions:  real relapses or the patients have not been treated  with the right doses of steroids for a long enough period of time? Are there already preliminary results of the Methotrexate for ENL study? Does PEP cause an increase in impairments in newly diagnosed patients? New drug schedules? Life-long treatment for LL patients? Etc., etc.

Best regards,

Pieter AM Schreuder

Dear colleagues,

Ocular complications from leprosy can lead to irreversible disability and blindness, yet they often go unrecognized and unreported.

We're pleased to announce the launch of the ILEP Ocular Leprosy Photo Database, now available on the Infolep platform. Developed in collaboration with the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP), this open-access resource aims to improve early detection and training by providing a growing collection of ocular leprosy images.

We invite ophthalmologists, field workers, and other health professionals to help build this essential database by uploading photographs and relevant patient metadata.

Click
here for upload instruction.

As always, we invite you to explore the latest publications listed below. If full-text versions are not available on Infolep, feel free to reach out to us - we are happy to assist you with accessing articles or conducting literature searches.

Fw: Ref.: (LML) Graded nylon monofilaments for sensory assessment in leprosy. Available in protective containers, at no cost to the interested party

Leprosy Mailing List –  July 6,  2025

Ref.:  (LML) Graded nylon monofilaments for sensory assessment in leprosy. Available in protective containers, at no cost to the interested party

From:  Robert Jerskey, Carlsbad, USA

Dear Pieter and colleagues,

I have a sizable stock of carefully packaged loose, graded nylon monofilaments ---a big thanks to Elizabeth Voelker [formerly Elizabeth Tomancik, colleague of the late pioneering OT, Judith Bell-Krotoski who championed their utility in the field of leprosy] for donating them--- for distribution to the interested NGO, govt organization, or individual in the field of leprosy who is present during the Congress, for methodical use in the clinic.

A file with suggested guidelines and recommendations, as well as precautions, to be available.

Thanks to multiple LML postings --this year alone—for exhorting readers to recognize: the vital importance of identifying early nerve function impairment, e.g., Linda Lehman & Pieter Schreuder's May 30th post, as well as the reality of the pervasiveness of "silent neuropathy", e.g., Joel Almeida's and Ben Naafs' February posts.

Closing here with friendly greetings to fellow colleagues of the LML, my ongoing appreciation for LML (established during the previous ILC in Hyderabad in 2008?) as an enduring online beacon in the field of leprosy, and my gratitude to the dedicated team of organizers of the ILC Bali.

See email address below for contact.

Respectfully,

Robert Jerskey
