Fw: Ref.: (LML) Update on ILC 2022 - Extension of last date for submission of abstracts to 15 June 2022

Leprosy Mailing List – May 31,  2022

Ref.:  (LML) Update on ILC 2022 - Extension of last date for submission of abstracts to 15 June 2022

From:  P. Narasimha Rao, Hyderabad, India

Dear Pieter,

I am happy to post an update on ILC 2022.

The preparations for the ILC 2022 are going well. The response to abstract submission is good. However, we received a number of requests for extension of the last date for abstract submission. Hence the Organising committee has decided to extend the last date for abstract submission to 15th June 2022.  I request all to avail this opportunity to submit your abstracts, in case you have not done so already.

We have received about 500  delegate registrations till now, a good number of them physical delegates. All the major stakeholders have agreed to take part in the congress and many of them as official partners.  I once again take this opportunity to invite the global leprosy community to take part in this congress.  We welcome you all to India and the congress as physical delegates.

For those not willing to be physical delegates, please note that there is an option to be an E-delegate,  which will provide access to almost all the sessions of the conference.  There is a separate award paper session for E-delegates where students/ trainees can take part.

Please visit the congress website for all the updates. https://www.ilc-india2022.com

Fw: Ref.: (LML) Hosting a LML session at ILC 2022

Leprosy Mailing List – May 25,  2022

Ref.:  (LML) Hosting a LML session at ILC 2022

From:  Joseph Kawuma, Kampala, Uganda

Dear Pieter,

In the first place, I would like to thank Ben Naafs for his call for suggestions for a LML session at the coming congress (LML, April 10, 2022).

Among others, I would like to hear the presentation of experiences with the prevention of disability, especially in low endemic settings where leprosy control is (in some places) left at the mercy of other disease programs e.g. TB/leprosy, NTD or national communicable disease programs.

I am concerned about the loss of skills and time for basic nerve function assessment  and where it happens, interpretation and response in favour of the patient.

H Joseph Kawuma

Leprosy Mailing List – May 13,  2022

Ref.:  (LML) ILC India - November 2022

From:  Paul Saunderson, Ålesund, Norway

Dear Pieter,

I recently attended a meeting of the organizing committee of the ILC in Hyderabad and was pleased to see that there is very good progress, with great attention to detail.  With several deadlines coming up, I would like to encourage at much participation as possible.

The Congress website <https://www.ilc-india2022.com/#> is very clear and functional. Early-bird registration closes on May 15th.

Abstract submission via the same website closes on May 31st; there are clear guidelines for abstracts.

As most people will know by now, it will be a hybrid Congress, with both in-person and online attendees.  A new feature will be of interest to many: all sessions will be recorded and will be available to view online for about 1 month after the Congress closes, but only to registered participants.  Previously, it was difficult to attend all sessions of interest, as they overlapped, but now you can!

See you in Hyderabad!

Paul

Fw: Ref.: (LML) Support for participation of people affected by leprosy - non-colony representation

Leprosy Mailing List – May 5,  2022

Ref.:  (LML) Support for participation of people affected by leprosy - non-colony representation

From:  PK Jayashree, Bangalore, India

Dear Pieter,

Greetings from Bangalore, India!

This may not be the space to speak about it - however I was wondering if there is a way we can support those affected by Leprosy to participate proactively at the ILC. I was thinking of people who want to be at the event, absorb the proceedings, deliberate, take value and be engaged at a deeper level in the work.

There may be many people whose participation may not be from the leprosy colonies but are people who have the experience of Leprosy and want to contribute. These may be people who can speak for leprosy, if given an opportunity. People like me, who belong on the board of more than one charity (and board memberships are pro-bono). Since we do not belong exclusively to any one organisation, but belong to the work and speak for the work, we are often overlooked or passed over. The costs of registering as an individual may seem high to most.

I would love to hear from you all. The ILC should have enough people affected especially from the non-colony sector, participating. Especially those who can contribute. The ILC without enough representation of people affected living outside the colonies, would not be a balanced one, in my view. Especially since we are talking about people moving into communities and colonies becoming history, if we are to truly integrate everyone into the society.

Thanks and regards,

Jayashree

Fw: Ref.: (LML) A critical appraisal of the ENLIST severity scale for erythema nodosum leprosum

Leprosy Mailing List – May 4,  2022

Ref.:  (LML) A critical appraisal of the ENLIST severity scale for erythema nodosum leprosum

From:  Ben Naafs, Munnekeburen, the Netherlands

Dear Pieter,

I just read a to-the-point paper on PLOS NTD by Bhushan Kumar, Hitaishi Mehta,Tarun Narang and Sunil Dogra: "A critical appraisal of the ENLIST severity scale for erythema nodosum leprosum". https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0010378

Their closing paragraph of this article suggests the following:

"We would suggest that in the next revision of this useful scale, the authors should consider adding that presence of iritis/ iridocyclitis, orchitis, ulcerated/ necrotic skin lesions, and severe neuritis (even in the absence of skin lesions), whatever may be the score, should be labelled as severe ENL. This approach is similar to the lines on which authors have decided to categorize chronic ENL under 'severe' disease (even when the symptoms and signs do not qualify for that label) being fully aware that the episode of reaction is not always 'severe' in degree–; it is the sequelae that are of importance even if they affect a minority of the patients. So, for scoring, it should not matter when an important/ vital organ is involved in 1in 10 or 1 in 1000 patients. Further, various ambiguities in the terminology for scoring should be clarified–if the scale is intended to be ultimately used by health workers, physiotherapists or general duty medical officers involved in care of leprosy affected people."

I have always had difficulties using the ENLIST scale, and continue to use clinical impressions as before. The more, because it is an intermittent severe illness superimposed on the chronic Lepromatous Leprosy that except from acute damage to the eyes and testes usually leads to minimal damage to the nerves and other organs. As a researcher, I felt some guilt because I could not compare my findings and results with some other papers. But as a clinician, I felt comfortable and could still compare with others who used their clinical impression too. A scale would be useful, but it should be easily applicable for a clinician without too much time.

Maybe a topic for the congress in Hyderabad?

Ben
