Leprosy Mailing List –  May 23,  2024

Ref.:  (LML)  New Publications On Cross-Cutting Issues In NTDs. May, 2024.

From:  Roos Geutjes and Josephine Breman-Srivastava, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Dear colleagues,

Earlier this month the World Health Organization (WHO) published the
"Global report on neglected tropical diseases 2024". It describes a wide range of activities, accomplishments, and challenges across the portfolio of NTDS and all six WHO regions.

In this Newsletter, we are pleased to present a special section on the financial impact of NTDs. Immurana et al., (2024), examines the macroeconomic effects of certain NTDs, revealing that an increase in prevalence of disease is associated with a fall in economic performance. Another featured article by Patikorn et al., (2024), a systematic review, explores  the financial hardship among persons affected by NTDs, showing that catastrophic health spending and out-of-pocket costs related to certain NTDs can lead to financial hardship.

We would also like to highlight the article by Klepac et al., (2024), on "Climate change, malaria and neglected tropical diseases: a scoping review", which reveals that greater research focus on mitigation and adaptation strategies is crucial to safeguard global health gains against NTDs and malaria.

We hope you appreciate the collected list of new NTD publications, and please make sure to check out the News & Events section, as it contains some interesting upcoming webinars and courses.

Warm regards,

Roos Geutjes and Josephine Breman-Srivastava
