From: Ben Naafs, Munnekeburen, the Netherlands

Dear Pieter,

"The Brazilian Society of Hansenology (SBH), together with the Public Health School of Mato Grosso (one of the most endemic states in Brazil) and the State Health Department of Mato Grosso, have established an agreement to form between 50 and 60 new hansenologists from 2023 to 2025." (LML, October 3, 2024: "Our new doctors have no clue about leprosy").

It was already known for a long time that there were serious problems with the leprosy program in Mato Grosso. That just Mato Grosso was chosen for this new initiative may be called marvellous (LML, October 3, 2024). Very impressed by the way Claudio Salgado and colleagues are trying to solve the problem of "lack of clinical skills and increasing awareness". And reading his letter it is paying off. Detection rates have gone up: "The initial results are very encouraging. In 2023, Mato Grosso was the first Brazilian state to return to pre-pandemic levels of new cases from 2019, and it currently ranks first in new leprosy case detection in Brazil."

This should be an encouragement to other areas in Brazil and in other endemic countries to start similar initiatives. Ways should be found to solve the problems in low and non-endemic countries as well. The Claudio Salgado letter stresses the importance of the cooperation between the health department of states, the public health department of medical schools and the professional leprosy organisations.

Best regards,

Ben
