Dear Pieter,

Artificial intelligence is already part of everyday life. The question raised by the LML board—for itself and for its readers—is both timely and necessary.

Your question as I perceived it: How close to the truth are AI-generated answers to questions made by humans about leprosy?

I often rely on triangulation, a method I learned from an anthropology colleague. When one AI programme provides an answer to my question, I feed it to other, competing AI systems. I am often pleasantly surprised by how critically these systems respond, which gives me greater confidence in arriving at a truthful answer.

I liked Sunil's remarks ("we can try putting symptoms of leprosy on Google and see if it makes correct diagnosis"). Let me take this idea one step further.
Assessing the reliability of AI responses on leprosy-related topics could itself become a valuable subject for micro-operational research. I am not much of a scientist, but I can think of one possible approach: to submit a defined set of questions on leprosy — clinical, epidemiological, sociological, and others — repeatedly to different AI systems. A panel of experts could then evaluate the answers using established criteria, grading their accuracy and consistency.

My text was reviewed by ChatGPT, which improved its fluency and corrected typos and errors in my English.

Best,
Henk Eggens
