Leprosy Mailing List – April 9, 2013
Ref.: (LML) New Case Detection
From: Jaison Barreto, Bauru, Brazil
Dear Pieter,
Thank you Dr. Kawuma for your question about details of the case we presented on April 3rd. The patient was found by Dr J. Cabral in the Mato Grosso state. This physician, pediatric, is one of the most important person fighting against leprosy in this state, with the support of DAHW (German Leprosy and TB Relief Association).
About our work at the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, supported by DAHW. More details can be seen in the site www.dahwmt.org.br.
The Brazilian Health Ministry is now also working hard, trying to find cases of early leprosy among school children. We know that most cases of leprosy were infected when the individual was still a child, and the sources of infection are, usually, the parents or grandfather / grandmother. In most cases, the latter have LL leprosy, without lesions, which in turn causes difficulties to diagnose it.
The problem I have seen, nowadays, is the lack of suspicion about leprosy, even when there is a case inside the family. Leprosy must be seen as a disease of the family, or we never will eliminate it.
Regards
Jaison
