Leprosy Mailing List – March 6,  2019
Ref.: (LML) Skin Smear Services neglected
From:  Francesca Gajete, Manila, the Philippines

Dear Respected LML Editors,

Greetings from the Philippines!

Finally, somebody listened to the sentiment of this retired national program manager. Thank you very much for finally responding. I hope this will be shared by and from the LML editors during the 20th ILC to be held in Manila this September 10-13, 2019.

Yes, Philippines resurrected the training on SSS some 10 years ago and partnered with the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM), the government research arm in the training for Medical Technologists, Medical Technicians and even Physicians both in Government and Private practice. We hope our Department of Health will agree on the shift from Ziehl-Neelsen to Fite-Faraco staining ( FFS). The FFS was started at the Dr Jose N Rodriguez Memorial Hospital ,formerly Tala Leprosarium few years ago.

The Philippines Manual of Procedure which was revised and updated in 2012 after the reviews made by WHO External Evaluators included the importance of SSS and also to follow the GLP updates on the use of any two of the cardinal signs of leprosy, also, emphasizing the importance of SSS when in doubt in leprosy diagnosis. The majority of the Regional Program Managers, Partner Dermatology Teaching Institutions follow suit.

Thank you for your update and support. This is indeed very enlightening and most appreciated.

Yours in Leprosy service,

Dr Francesca Cando Gajete, MHA, FPLS
Former National Leprosy Control Program Manager, Philippines
Vice President, International Leprosy Association, Philippines
