I have been a recipient of the LML now for a couple of years. I always envisaged being just an observer, as the work of the St Francis Leprosy Guild has traditionally been to send stipendiary payments to leprosy villages, clinics, leprosy hospitals and the like for their daily sustenance, rather than any support of e.g. research or active case-finding.
However, over the last few years we have been re-vitalising our activities and hope, in our 125th anniversary year commencing on 23rd October, to roll out new proposals for both these activities. We are still small, but we have increased our donor base by over 100% in the past 18 moths and hope to have funds to support up to £200,000 of research projects and several active-case finding projects in the field over up to five years at up to around £5,000 per year. The coronavirus pandemic has of course affected our plans, but we will be holding a celebratory mass at some point, and we hope to fund a lecture at the LSHTM next spring. If it were possible for me to announce these events and our new ventures when the time is right, I should be most grateful. I did try to send a round-robin email on LML some months ago, but it was not permitted, suggesting I am indeed identified as only a recipient.
