Join us in celebrating World Leprosy Day (WLD) on the 28th of January and World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Day on the 30th of January.
This year's theme for World Leprosy Day (WLD) is "Ending Stigma, Embracing Dignity". This theme reminds us to continuously work towards eradicating the stigma associated with leprosy and to promote the dignity of people affected by leprosy.
The theme of the fourth World NTD Day is "Unite.Act.Eliminate". The overarching aim is to end NTDs, and we are reminded and encouraged to bring renewed attention to NTDs, build political will and mobilize resources, and put individuals and communities at the center of the response. Together, we can collectively generate the attention and resources needed to deliver against the targets outlined in the WHO 2030 NTD roadmap. Be sure to take action! Below is a list of organized campaigns and messages that can be used during World Leprosy Day and World NTD Day:

Basic Psychological Support for Person's Affected by NTDs (BPS-N)
On InfoNTD you can find a guide on Basic Psychological Support for Persons Affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases (BPS-N). The guide has been adapted from the Psychological First Aid: Guide for field workers (World Health Organization, War Trauma Foundation, World Vision International, 2011). It has been adapted to better respond to the challenges associated with the mental health consequences of NTDs.
In addition to the Guide, you can find pocket-sized guides on the BPS-N in Hindi and in English, as well as a video with a brief example of how Basic Psychological Support is provided to a person affected.

World NTD Day: Overview, Progress, and Highlights
January 25, 2024, 15:00 CET; Online.
A few days ahead of World NTD day 2024 Internews HJN, in partnership with RTI International, will host a virtual event livestreamed on YouTube, FB, and X on progress towards elimination of NTDs. Many members of the HJN come from communities where NTDs remain a challenge and interaction with global health experts can offer a deeper understanding of these diseases, their root causes, and what is being done to eliminate them. Important milestones have been achieved in making progress towards eliminating tropical diseases, but much more needs to be done especially when considering today's global challenges. Innovation in vaccine development for specific NTDs will also be covered, along with an in-depth look at Leishmaniases and Noma disease.
Global appeal 2024 to end stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy
January 31, 2024; 17:00-18:10 CET; Geneva, Switzerland.
WHO will host the launch of the Global Appeal 2024 to end stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy, led by the Sasakawa Leprosy (Hansen's Disease) Initiative. The event will take place in the WHO Auditorium, in the presence of the WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Mr Yohei Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination; it will be opened by a concert.

Reframing neglect: a fine art and documentary photography exhibition on NTDs
January 30, 2024; 18:00-20:30 EST; New York, USA.
This exhibit features photographers from six countries across Africa where neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are prevalent. In breathtakingly bold colors, it dissects social issues and challenges western representations of Africa by creating a powerful interpretation of the impact of NTDs on gender equity, mental health, mobility and access to resources.
Call for applications: TDR Clinical Research Leadership fellowship programme
TDR, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, is a global programme of scientific collaboration that helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat diseases of poverty. The purpose of the Clinical Research Leadership (CRL) fellowship programme is to provide funding support to researchers and clinical trial staff from LMICs to acquire essential leadership skills in clinical research through placements in TPOs. The scheme targets mid-career clinical researchers or clinical trial staff who are employed by a legal entity in an LMIC where they are currently conducting clinical research activities in the scope of TDR and in a broad range of poverty-related infectious diseases, emerging infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). Application deadline is 19th February, 2024; 17:00 CET.
Sasakawa Health Foundation: Call for Grant Proposals for Hansen's Disease
The Sasakawa Health Foundation has opened a call for grant proposals that focus on one or all of three areas: tackling disease, fighting discrimination, and preserving history. The application period for projects starting in September 2024 is March 11 - April 12, 2024.
World Skin Health Day | Guinea 2024
January 27-31, 2024; Guinea.
For its fourth edition, the World Skin Health Day is celebrated in Guinea. The Congress is organized by the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) and the International Society of Dermatology. In collaboration with WHO, the day of January 30 is entirely dedicated to NTDs, as the date coincides with the World NTD Day.
NTD Inclusion Score Card (NISC) Action Plan Toolkit
A NISC Action Plan Toolkit has been added to the NISC page on InfoNTD. It is intended to serve as a reference point for best practices and/or strategies and ideas of tangible actions that can be taken by NTD organisations, following the identification of gaps/challenges (from the NISC assessment) regarding inclusion and meaningful participation of persons affected by NTDs.
Additionally, the Hindi version of the NISC facilitation slides has been updated.
World NTD Day Celebration 2024: Uniting Globally for Skin-NTDs

Removing obstacles to the NTD road map in the post-COVID-19 scenario: a webinar organized by the network of WHO collaborating centres for NTDs

The World Health Organization (WHO) has set up over 50 collaborating centres related to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). These institutions play a key role in developing more advanced technologies and cost–effective strategies, and significantly contribute to boosting control, elimination and eradication of NTDs worldwide. These WHO collaborating centres will come together on 30 January 2024, on the occasion of World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, at a virtual workshop to discuss how they can contribute to accelerate progress towards the 2030 targets set in the NTD road map.
The Mwele Malecela Mentorship Program for Women in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
The Mwele Malecela Mentorship (MMM) Program for Women in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) supports mid-career African women to become leaders and champions in NTD elimination at national and international levels. Using an innovative gender-intentional approach, the MMM program aims to increase the overall coverage, effectiveness, and impact of NTD interventions by ensuring the program support for women to overcome gender barriers in access to leadership while also acquiring skills and resources that enable them to be influential leaders and agents of change.

TropicalMed 2023 Young Investigator Award
TropicalMed is inviting nominations for the TropicalMed 2023 Young Investigator Award. The prize will be given to one young investigator in recognition of their excellence in the field of tropical medicine and infectious disease.
The nomination deadline is the 31st of January, 2024.
TropicalMed 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award
TropicalMed is inviting applications for the TropicalMed 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award. The prize will be awarded to a PhD student or recently qualified PhD who produced a highly anticipated thesis with great academic potential. Application deadline is the 31st January, 2024.
The Health for All Film Festival
The 5th Health for ALL Film Festival calls for submissions from 1st of November 2023 to the 31st of January 2024. Public institutions, NGO's, communities, activists and students in public health, film schools, and other relevant domains are invited to submit their short films. The main categories are: Universal Health Coverage, Health Emergencies, and Better Health and Well-being.
Climate Impacts Awards
Wellcome Foundation has launched its 2024 Climate Impact Awards. In 2024 they aim for fund projects that generate context-specific evidence using community knowledge and experiences to deliver actionable policy outcomes that can be scaled to multiple settings. We will prioritise funding for research that involves and serves the needs of communities most impacted by the health effects of climate change, and advances stories and narratives that tend to be absent in the media or underrepresented in public discourse. Application deadline is the 3rd of April, 2024.
Call for Papers: Addressing the snakebite challenge - progress towards the 2030 roadmap
RSTMH are seeking submissions for a Special Issue, to be published in Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (TRSTMH), which aims to bring together research on improving the understanding of snakebites and snakebite envenoming. The deadline for submissions is the 31st of March, 2024.
