(LML) Thalidomide in treating kidney involvement in ENL

Leprosy Mailing List – December 16,  2013

Ref.:   (LML) Thalidomide in treating kidney involvement in ENL

From:  Jingquan Wang,  Zhejiang, China

Dear Dr Schreuder,

Thalidomide is recommended to be the first choice drugs to treat ENL in China. Recently I have used thalidomide to treat a severe ENL case with kidney involvement. The female patient aged 45, presented with ENL on the face and limbs, accompanied by albuminuria, blood in urine and leukocyturia. I treated her with thalidomide 300 mg daily and she responded well with subsiding skin lesions and disappearing albuminuria except persistent blood in urine and leukocyturia.

I would like to ask readers of the LML if anyone has any experience about the use of thalidomide in treating kidney involvement of ENL reactions. I am wondering whether thalidomide can treat the other organs involvement  in ENL reactions.

Best regards,

Jingquan Wang
