Noted Eye Doctor Margaret Brand Dies at Age 95

Pioneering leprosy expert and eye doctor Margaret Brand died on November 17, 2014, in Seattle, Washington. She and her surgeon husband, Dr. Paul Brand, dedicated their medical careers and their lives to people affected by leprosy. They dramatically impacted the care and treatment of leprosy patients and were instrumental in changing how the world views leprosy and in improving the lives of people affected by the disease.
Born in England in 1919 and raised in South Africa, Margaret went on to be one of only a few women studying medicine in London during World War II. She and her husband later served at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India as well as the Schieffelin Institute of Health – Research and Leprosy Center in Karigiri, India and the National Hansen’s Disease Center in Carville, Louisiana.
A medical doctor with no formal training in eye diseases, Margaret became an ophthalmologist. She pioneered efforts to understand and repair leprosy-related eye damage and became one of the foremost authorities on ocular leprosy.
From 1977 to 1996, she served on the Board of Directors of American Leprosy Missions.
In 2003, Dr. Paul Brand passed away in Seattle, Washington. He and Margaret are survived by their six children.
