Ref.: (LML) detection of autoantibodies in leprosy
From: Ben Naafs, Munnekesburen, the Netherlands
Dear Pieter,
I read the question of dr Jingquan Wang (LML, August 26, 2016). The presence of auto antibodies is well known in Leprosy, even after “cure” they often stay present. In elderly people, I think these patients are elderly, ANA’s are often positive without any significance. You should exclude collagen diseases naturally. Concerning anti thyroid antibodies the same applies. AST can be positive after any infection and I think these patients may have had quite a number, including erysipelas.
I agree with not treating these old patients. These findings do not implicate active leprosy disease.
With regards,
Dr Ben Naafs
