Ref.: (LML) Loss of alms income during coronavirus crisis
From: Joel Almeida, London and Mumbai
Dear Pieter,
The biggest challenge for people who normally survive on alms giving is mere survival, during coronavirus-related lockdowns. Without special attention to people disfigured by HD, we can expect deaths not just from coronavirus but eventually also from starvation.
If we step into the shoes of someone with no digits, experiencing a sudden shutdown in alms giving, we can begin to appreciate how they are struggling to survive. Even people without disfigurement struggle to fight their way to the front of the queue for bare necessities. People with physical disabilities have very slim prospects.
All friends of those affected might consider raising their voices to encourage governments to take special measures to provide at least survival rations to HD-affected people previously dependent on alms for survival. We would like, of course, that nobody should be dependent on alms, but we have to deal with reality as it is today. Even organisations in the UN family can do the needful to help protect HD-affected people during this crisis.
