Dear Pieter,

I should start by commending you and members of your editorial team for the valuable service you continue to provide to the leprosy community with the LML platform.

I found your recent survey (which I promptly responded to) on the subject of the appropriateness of the term TROPICAL MEDICINE,  quite interesting and refreshing. Congratulations to the German Society for the initiative.

As you know, active case detection has assumed a critical role in the global aspiration for interruption of transmission and elimination of leprosy. Indeed, pillar 2 of the new global Leprosy/Hansen's disease strategy (2021 – 2030) explicitly states: SCALE UP PREVENTION ALONGSIDE ACTIVE CASE DETECTION.

While details may differ depending on peculiarities in individual settings, it is important to seek a consensus on a core definition of active case detection.

Below is a suggested definition. I should greatly appreciate it if you could survey LML readers on their position on the proposal.

Readers may also put forward alternative definitions should they fundamentally disagree with what is proposed here.

ACTIVE CASE-FINDING/DETECTION in disease control: a definition

Active case-finding is provider-initiated intervention, irrespective of location of the intervention, designed to identify individuals in a predetermined target group, with signs/symptoms of a disease or condition, with the aim of linking such individuals to treatment or care following (confirmation of) diagnosis.

Thank you very much for your usual cooperation.
