Can the current health delivery system in India manage the leprosy burden?

Leprosy Mailing List – November 8th, 2009

Ref.: Can the current health delivery system in India manage the leprosy burden? (see attachment)

From: Ganapati R., Mumbai, India

Dear Dr Noto,

I am enclosing my critical comments on leprosy management in some selected parts of India when I have done field studies. This was the subject of my invited lecture at the Conference of the Indian Association of Leprologists held in New Delhi on 2-4 October 2009.

Following the presentation there was a lively debate on the role of NGOs, assisting the National Leprosy Eradication Programme of the Govt. of India. Though no definite conclusions were drawn after the session which was chaired by the Chief Leprosy Program Officer of the Govt. of India, there was general agreement there is a vast scope for improvement in managing the field aspects of leprosy in India.

If you think that this write up is worth publication as an LML you may consider my request so that I may have the benefit of exchange of views from many of your readers.

Thanks & regards,

Dr R Ganapati
