(LML) Announcement Leprosy Research Initiative: deadline for submission of Letter of Intent

Leprosy Mailing List – December 21 ,  2014

Ref.:  (LML)  Announcement Leprosy Research Initiative: deadline for submission of Letter of Intent

From:  Nicole Dinnissen, NLR, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Dear all,

The Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI) is a combined venture of the Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR), American Leprosy Missions (ALM), German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association (GLRA) and The Leprosy Mission Canada (TLMC). Guided by an allied policy with clearly defined research priorities, the four partners have established a joint fund to support leprosy research. The joint fund will be reserved for research that is exclusively or strongly related to leprosy. Additional resources will be actively sought for research in the field of general disabilities and for research aimed at different diseases (e.g. other NTDs, TB and diabetes) in combination with leprosy.

Researchers interested to apply for funding by the LRI are invited to complete and submit a Letter of Intent (LoI), giving an outline of the intended research. The LoI should use the format provided on the LRI website (www.leprosyresearch.org ). Applications that do not follow this format will not be considered.

A Letter of Intent may be submitted at any time during the year. However, to be considered for the budget round 2016, LoIs should be submitted by April 1st, 2015 by e-mail to the LRI Secretariat, c/o Ms. Nicole Dinnissen (info@leprosyresearch.org ). This letter will be screened by the LRI Steering Committee (SC). If the feedback by the SC is positive, the applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal before the next deadline (June 1st).

With kind regards,

Nicole Dinnissen

(LML) In Memoriam Robert C. Hastings

Leprosy Mailing List – December 21,  2014

Ref.:    (LML) In Memoriam Robert C. Hastings

From:  David M. Scollard, NHDP, Louisiana,  USA

Dear Pieter,

Dr. Robert C. Hastings, pharmacologist and internationally distinguished leprologist, passed away on Dec. 15, 2014, at age 76, after a long illness.  Affectionately known to colleagues around the world as ‘Bob’, he sometimes described himself as ‘a country boy from the mountains of Tennessee’, where he was born.  He earned his medical degree at the University of Tennessee and a PhD in Pharmacology from Tulane University.  He was a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service, and spent his entire career at the USPHS Hospital at Carville, Louisiana.   In addition to his clinical duties there, he was a leading investigator in studies of the pharmacology of several important drugs used in leprosy.  Over a remarkable 40-year career, from 1968 to 1998, he was an author or co-author on nearly 80 peer-reviewed publications dealing with anti-mycobacterial and anti-inflammatory drugs in this disease.  This included seminal work on the treatment of leprosy reactions with thalidomide.  He retired as Chief of the Laboratory Research Branch of the US National Hansen’s Disease Programs in 1994.

Bob Hastings is undoubtedly best known internationally for his remarkable career as an editor.  He was the Editor of The International Journal of Leprosy from 1979 – 2002, encouraging and promoting the publication of many reports from young investigators and spending countless hours assisting them in revising manuscripts for publication.   He was also the Editor of ‘Leprosy’, the textbook published in 1985 with contributions from the major leprologists of the time.  This has been the standard text on this disease for more than 25 years, and is on the shelf of nearly everyone working on this disease today.   He dedicated this text to his granddaughter, born in 1983, ‘. . . in the hopes that her children, and her children’s generation all over the world, [would] be free from leprosy’.   Bob was a skilled and empathetic physician, an outstanding intellect, and a critical thinker.  He was self-effacing and genial in his interactions with colleagues ranging from prominent scientists to those just beginning their careers.  In his farewell as the Editor of the Journal he wished, to those continuing in the field,    ‘. . . every success in making further contributions to some of God’s most needy people, leprosy patients.’ He will be greatly missed and long remembered for his contributions to the fight against leprosy.

(LML) Input into London Declaration on NTDs Scorecard

Leprosy Mailing List – December 3,  2014

Ref.:   (LML)  Input into London Declaration on NTDs Scorecard

From:  Lenka Nahodilova and Wim van Brakel, ILEP, London, UK

Dear Colleagues,

There is an opportunity for all stakeholders in the leprosy field to highlight their current involvement in research on leprosy.

The Uniting to Combat NTDs group, sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), is currently collecting data for the 3rd Annual Report on progress towards targets, which were defined in the WHO Roadmap on NTDs (2011) and endorsed by the London Declaration on NTDs in 2012.

ILEP is representing the leprosy field in the London Declaration Disease Specific Working Group. In this capacity, we have been assigned the task of collecting and collating information on current research in leprosy in order to provide input into the 3rd Annual Report and its Scorecard. Dr Wim van Brakel has been assigned to lead this task.

As part of the process we are currently collecting information on research projects in leprosy. Hence we would be grateful if you would share with us information on large(r) research projects that your organization is currently undertaking or supporting or research projects that will start in the future. In general, we are interested in research projects that will be finished by 2018, or implemented by 2020. If relevant to the London Declaration targets, projects submitted in time may be included in the Uniting to Combat NTDs 3rd Annual Report.

If you would like to take part in this survey, please read the attachment for more details and fill in the short questionnaire which is enclosed.

Please kindly send the filled in questionnaire by Monday 8 December 2014 to Lenka Nahodilova, email address: LNahodilova@ilep.org.uk

Thank you very much for your kind cooperation!

With kind regards

Lenka Nahodilova and Wim van Brakel.

Noted Eye Doctor Margaret Brand Dies at Age 95

American Leprosy Missions | November 17, 2014

Pioneering leprosy expert and eye doctor Margaret Brand died on November 17, 2014, in Seattle, Washington. She and her surgeon husband, Dr. Paul Brand, dedicated their medical careers and their lives to people affected by leprosy. They dramatically impacted the care and treatment of leprosy patients and were instrumental in changing how the world views leprosy and in improving the lives of people affected by the disease.

Born in England in 1919 and raised in South Africa, Margaret went on to be one of only a few women studying medicine in London during World War II. She and her husband later served at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India as well as the Schieffelin Institute of Health – Research and Leprosy Center in Karigiri, India and the National Hansen’s Disease Center in Carville, Louisiana.

A medical doctor with no formal training in eye diseases, Margaret became an ophthalmologist. She pioneered efforts to understand and repair leprosy-related eye damage and became one of the foremost authorities on ocular leprosy.

From 1977 to 1996, she served on the Board of Directors of American Leprosy Missions.

In 2003, Dr. Paul Brand passed away in Seattle, Washington. He and Margaret are survived by their six children.

(LML) ILEP shares Expertise & Best Practices in Urban Leprosy

Leprosy Mailing List – November 8,  2014

Ref.:    (LML) ILEP shares Expertise & Best Practices in Urban Leprosy

From:  Marivic F. Balagon, Cebu, Philippines

Dear Pieter,

Recent findings suggest that leprosy control services in urban localities  are less  structured and poorly coordinated/ implemented, thus the need to find strategic measures to address this problem.

To improve leprosy control services in urban settings, ILEP conducted a global survey  to  identify and address various issues and concerns through sharing of expertise and“ best practices “among  leprosy health workers .

The enclosed document summarizes our findings and recommendations which we would like to share with our colleagues in leprosy work, particularly in urban settings.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Marivic F. Balagon,M.D.
