(LML) A day on the ground

Leprosy Mailing List – November 10,  2016

Ref.: (LML) A day on the ground

From:  Francesca Gajete and Teresa Gabriel, Manilla, Philippines

Dear LML readers,

In reaction to the LML letters of Joel Almeida and Grace Warren “A day on the ground”, an interesting and very stimulating exchange developed between Dr. Francesca Gajete, previous national coordinator NLCP of the Philippines and member of the board of ILA, and Dr. Teresa Gabriel, the Chairperson of the Dermatology department and Leprosy Unit of the Research Institute on Tropical Medicine ( RITM), the research facility of the Department of Health of the Philippines, also recognized and accredited by WHO for the training of Fellows in TB/Leprosy & NTDs. She is Past President of the Philippine Dermatological Society (PDS) and member of the World Association of Dermatologists. Currently, the Chair of PDS Leprosy Interest Group.

“Dear Colleagues,

I do agree with Dr Grace Warren (LML< November 1, 2016)  that it's about time we address the issue on involving the Academe, CHED, DepEd.

This has been our longtime dream. Let's make it happen now, my dear friends.

“Dear Dr. Gajete,

In order for us to identify patients with early leprosy, we need to train also the medical technologists from health care centers, far flung areas and institutions that diagnose Leprosy only through clinical manifestations.

We have informed them that we are willing to train medical technologists for at least 2 weeks but we have not received any interested participants from the regions that were involved in the workshop on leprosy and common skin diseases.

As part of the workshop, we encourage the participants to do contact tracing to address possible reinfection from index family members and be able to treat leprosy early.

I am very thankful to NLCP for their continuous support in capacity building of health care personnel nationwide and projects geared to address stigma among leprosy patients.

Dr. Gabriel

“Dear  Dr Gabriel,

Thank you for opening  the  doors in training of Leprosy Control Program frontline health workers particularly the Medical Technologies.

I have included in the thread Program Managers and Cluster Heads. I would also suggest that the Philippine Association of Medical Technologist (PAMET) should be made aware of the various trainings available in your institution particularly in Leprosy & NTDs.

God Bless and my warm regards,

Dr Gajete
