From:  P. Narasimha Rao, Hyderabad, India

Dear Pieter,

Greetings. The ILC 2022 preparations are going on well. The Covid pandemic is abating rapidly  in India and we  are looking forward to a good  physical participation of delegates  in the congress. The website https://www.ilc-india2022.com is active and being updated with new information every week. I request members to visit this website for information regarding the congress. The abstract submission  portal will be open on 1st March. 2022.

To support leprosy Health-care providers  and young researchers for writing and submitting the abstracts to the congress,  the scientific committee has decided to initiate an Abstract mentor program (AMP) whose details are given below. We are inviting members of the leprosy scientific community to volunteer to be mentors for this program.  I request you to post this information in the LML group. I will provide further updates on ILC 2022 in the next few days.

Best regards

Narasimha Rao

The Abstract Mentor Program (AMP)  for ILC 2022

Call for Mentor volunteers

The Scientific committee of ILC 2022  would like to initiate the Abstract Mentor Programme (AMP) for 21st ILC 2022 with the objective to support interested leprosy Health-care providers (HCP)  & researchers improve their abstracts before submitting them, in order to increase the chance of their work being presented at the congress. It would also assist them in preparation of the final presentation, once the abstract is accepted. Over the years, the AMP has proven to increase the motivation of early and young career researchers. This programme was found especially advantageous for abstract submissions as observed in other public health congresses.

The Abstract Mentor Program (AMP) especially targets  HCP & researchers from resource-limited settings, who seek access to support  for mentoring in research and writing. Over the years, the AMP has proven to increase the number of abstract submissions received from resource-limited countries. The AMP is completely independent of the abstract review and selection process.

Benefits of AMP

The AMP provides an opportunity for junior scientists, scholars  and HCPs, especially those from non-English speaking backgrounds,  to work with experienced scientists to enhance their scientific presentation capabilities. It would also be an excellent opportunity to ask specific questions for formatting their abstracts,  such as how to minimize the word count and still convey the message.

It  will be a good opportunity for mentors  to assist  and help mentees fulfil their aspiration of presenting their work at the ILC 2022.  For the mentor it's always fulfilling to look at a wide range of research from diverse settings and work with a junior scientist and to see them develop their ideas into a well-constructed presentation.

Become a mentor for AMP of ILC 2022

The continued success of the AMP rests on the invaluable contributions of a dedicated team of volunteer mentors, who generously share their expertise and experience in abstract writing. These experienced researchers answer questions on practical issues, such as formal requirements of abstract writing, the quality of the data collected, and the methods applied.

Mentors will provide one-time, anonymous feedback on the writing and format of an abstract. They are not asked to provide technical support on research methods, analysis, or the report of results. However, they may correct spelling and grammar.

The scientific committee of ILC 2022  would like to invite members of the leprosy scientific community /LML to volunteer to be Mentors for AMP.

Mentors must have had at least two abstracts accepted at international scientific conferences and have co-authored at least one manuscript accepted by a peer-reviewed scientific journal. If you meet these criteria, and are willing to volunteer some time (average commitment time is 4-8 hours over three months) to support junior investigators and less-experienced researchers, we would love to hear from you! The abstract submissions will start from 1st March and  will close by 31st May 2022.

If you are willing, sign up by writing to us at <abstract-mentorprogram@ilc-india2022.com> with a copy to <ilc2022india@gmail.com> in the below given format.  We  will share  further details once we receive your mail.

Thanking you,

Organising and Scientific committee

ILC 2022
