Dear Pieter,
Dr. Ben Naafs has shared so well the special person that Dr. Felton Ross was to many. I too remember his patient mentorship as we saw patients together in Brazil and other countries. He was persistent that physical exams included nerve examination that not only included palpation but quantitative sensory and motor function at all health levels, not just reference centers.
He promoted Judy Bell-Krotoski's work in using Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament sensory testing and work in monitoring early change that influenced the development and adoption of S-W monofilament field kits from SORRI-Bauru which today has been an integral part of leprosy control programs in Brazil.
He also was concerned that health workers saw the whole person, not only their health but their socio/economic, emotional and spiritual situation. I recall he taught me and others through "hands on example" and good reflective questions. He encouraged not only individuals but teams and was an example of promoting collaboration between health workers, institutions, NGOs, Churches, Government programs and communities.
I recall his special admiration Felton and his wife Una had for Sister Sinkenesh's community work involving person's affected by Hansen's disease which was located near ALERT in Ethiopia. He valued the contributions of women, mercy and justice.
One verse that reminded me of Felton Ross is from Colossians 3:12. "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. This is Dr. Felton Ross.
As Ben said, "a great man is gone". I will miss him.
