Dear Pieter,

In a follow-up to the LML discussion about the state of affairs in Tanzania I would like to contribute mentioning the following events that took place late 2021 in Tanzania. By the way, it brings back memories when I was a small part of the exceptionally well-run leprosy control programme in Tanzania in the eighties and nineties.

I quote the Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy  website: https://zeroleprosy.org/tanzanias-zero-leprosy-country-review/

"The National Leprosy Programme of Tanzania conducted a review of leprosy activities in partnership with the Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy (GPZL) in late November."

"The reviewers and partners developed a high-level roadmap to zero leprosy for Tanzania. This national Zero Leprosy Roadmap aligns with the WHO Road Map for Neglected Tropical Diseases 2021 – 2030 and outlines strategies to achieve goals leading up to 2030. The roadmap will be presented to the Ministry of Health for approval and adoption. GPZL is excited to continue this important work toward ending leprosy in Tanzania alongside the country's National Leprosy Programme."

Publication of this roadmap and taking action along that strategy with partners could be an important step forward to raising awareness about the leprosy situation in Tanzania. More importantly, it could lead to an enhanced quality of care for the existing and newly diagnosed leprosy patients in Tanzania.

Best,

Henk Eggens
