Dear Pieter,

I noted the comment by Ben Naafs (LML, March 11, 2022). He is quite right. In addition to my response to Dr. Theuvenet, leprosy is a hidden problem in Morogoro Region and in particular Kilombero district. The latest reports by the Ministry of Health show a prevalence of 4.8/10,000 in Kilombero, which "could be" highest in Tanzania.

Awareness is indeed lacking in most parts of the country. Many people sincerely believe that Hansen's disease is history, until they, like me, are confronted with live clinical cases.  I am trying to initiate an awareness campaign , starting with the hot spots in this district in collaboration with the Nazareth Leprosy Centre in Ifakara, and if I get funding I will surely initiate research (early case finding, PEP, diagnosis and response to treatment).

Regards,

Robert
