Dear Pieter and colleagues,

The coronavirus threat has prompted the editors of Nature, a reasonably ethical scientific journal, to urge that:

"Research findings are made available via preprint servers before journal publication, or via platforms that make papers openly accessible before peer review, with clear statements regarding the availability of underlying data." (1)

This followed a statement by many of the world's health-related organisations. (2)

In the real world, rapid open publication is critical to saving lives and reducing suffering.

We can be proud of LML, which has been a pioneer of rapid, open publication. Long may it continue as an independent online venue for nearly all the world's knowledgeable HD experts and stakeholders, where together we can advance scientific knowledge, provide expert answers to queries from frontline workers, correct errors, help to protect the nerves, limbs, eyes, minds, livelihoods, rights and relationships of the people of endemic countries.

With appreciation and gratitude to all,

Joel Almeida
