Ref.: (LML) Replacing opinions about leprosy treatment with research
From: Vijayaraghavan, Chennai, India
Dear Pieter,
We can consider doing a small pilot study for fixed duration of Rifiampin treatment for LL leprosy cases and through the study patient should be kept in a Hospitalized condition with daily monitoring of Micro albumin Urine, 24 hrs urine for protein, Serum creatinine, Urea , Uric acid , GFR and if all these results are convincing with the presence of a nephrologist and found to be safe then we can do a administration on a smaller population globally in the form of a multi centric trial. Rifampicin although it kills vast majority of Viable bacilli, it has impact on Liver and Kidney functional status.
Please also ref to the publications of Dr. P.R. Mahadevan on the intra cellular survival of M.leprae, also the publications of Dr. Anura Rambukanna. This is my humble suggestion as a researcher but I am not a clinician I may be wrong also.
please some one suggest for the betterment of leprosy treatment methods
But in some patients Oxidative stress ( although it kils M.leprae) excessive production of free radicals (due to M. leprae infection and MDT) can affect the internal organs
