Leprosy Mailing List – July 11, 2022
Ref.: (LML) The agenda of the upcoming ILC and problems encountered in the field do not overlap
From: Wim Theuvenet, Apeldoorn, the Netherlands
Dear Sunil , Pieter and Ben,
Thank you for all your valuable comments!!!
We know that it has become a tradition at the ILC for working groups to come up with recommendations. Although I have become rather sceptical about its effect, to the organisers I still would like to suggest the following:
As a matter of priority, research is urgently recommended into:
1. The access for all patients to leprosy health care facilities, especially with regard to possible financial obstacles and the unhindered access to all rural health clinics and district hospitals.
2. The existing knowledge in the field about the (early) signs of leprosy, the diagnosis, and the treatment of leprosy incl. immune reactions and neuritis, and the availability of septic and reconstructive surgery.
3. Research on how to improve the results of the treatment of neuritis (as at a high cost it has stagnated in the last 30 years?).
4. The need for rapid leprosy surveys in previously middle and highly endemic areas.
5. The effects of the WHO elimination goals on the present global leprosy situation.
Trust that each of you will have your own list of suggestions??
With best personal regards,
Wim Theuvenet
