Dear colleagues,

LRI grants calls for proposals are now open for applications!

Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI) is pleased to launch two calls for proposals: for the Research capacity strengthening grant and for the RESILIENTD grant.

The deadline for submission for both calls is Friday January 24th, 2025 at 17:00 CET, so make sure to submit your Letter of Intent timely.

We regret to announce that the regular LRI grant call for proposals will not be launched today. Following new financial insights we are re-allocating our support to focus on ongoing projects and upcoming grant awards, and will launch the call again when possible.

Research capacity strengthening grant 🌱

After its successful debut two years ago, this grant is back to support early-career researchers. It is designed to fund innovative, short-term projects, with a streamlined review process. Awarded projects will commence in the second half of 2025.

This is a unique opportunity for early-career researchers to conduct impactful research, expand their expertise and skills, and make meaningful contributions to the global fight against leprosy and its associated challenges.

RESILIENTD Grant 🌍

In collaboration with our partner, Anesvad Foundation, the RESILIENTD grant is now open for its second round of applications. This funding focuses on addressing the social determinants of health in the context of skin NTDs, including leprosy, with a particular emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa.

This is a fantastic opportunity for impactful, integrated, innovative research projects aimed at improving skin NTD services and the well-being of individuals affected by skin NTDs. Applications from applicants based in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as female researchers, are strongly encouraged as well as projects that focus on gender and meaningfully involve persons affected by NTDs.

We look forward to your proposals for the Research capacity strengthening grant and RESILIENTD grant. We remain profoundly grateful for the contributions of our partners and steadfast in our commitment to advancing leprosy research. Together, we will continue working toward our vision of a world free from leprosy, and we hope to reintroduce the regular LRI grant soon.

Thank you for your understanding and continued dedication to this important work.

Researcher spotlight 🌟– Dr Suleiman Hudu Abdullahi, grantee of the LRI Research capacity strengthening grant

The inaugural call for proposals for the LRI Research capacity strengthening grant was launched in December 2022. Following a competitive selection process, two early-career researchers with impressive proposals were awarded the grant. Dr Suleiman Hudu Abdullahi is one of them.

We asked Dr Abdullahi to share insights into his experience with his project, the grant and its focus on strengthening the capacity of early-career researchers and are excited to share his reflections:

📝📈🔎About the project:

Nigeria faces a significant public health challenge, contributing 25% to the global burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), with 2,393 new leprosy cases reported in 2023. The country suffers from a severe shortage of dermatologists, with just one for every 1.6 million people. To address this, solutions like integrated skin screening and task shifting to general health workers (GHWs) are needed, although GHWs receive limited dermatological training. This project is utilising "collaborative co-design" to enhance educational collaboration among researchers, practitioners, affected individuals, and policymakers. Aligning with the WHO NTD roadmap and Global Leprosy Strategy, it aims to strengthen healthcare capacity and contribute to global health targets in Nigeria and beyond.

🌱🚀📊About the LRI Research capacity strengthening grant:

This grant pushes you beyond your comfort zone, enhancing not just research skills but also administrative, human resource management, logistics, and stakeholder engagement abilities. This program fosters networking and collaboration with the broader NTD INGO/NGO community. My mentors have been invaluable, offering support and encouragement throughout this journey. I am very confident that this journey will open doors to my next journey of becoming a leader who will contribute to achieving global NTD/Leprosy strategies through research that influences policy formulation. I hope to get and implement much bigger grants on NTDs in the near future.

🎯📚🌟How the grant has strengthened your capacity as an early-career researcher:

I always remain excited about this opportunity. There are many aspiring researchers, especially in NTD high-endemic nations, just like me. However, lack of mentors and availability of funding (small grants) are stumbling blocks. The LRI Research capacity strengthening grant is one of the few that has the potential to bridge this gap. I am confident that our work will have a significant contribution towards achieving global NTD/leprosy strategies in Nigeria. This LRI grant will not only enhance my research capacity as the PI but also my future as a young researcher. I am already collaborating with a skin disease specialist who is passionate about research (as a research associate) in the implementation. This multiplier effect will be a huge success.

LRI wishes Dr Suleiman a successful continuation of his project and development journey! We hope that early-career researchers are inspired by Dr Suleiman's story and submit their research proposals for the Research capacity strengthening grant.
