Ref.: (LML) plantar ulcers – survey new events
From: Erik Slim, Houten, the Netherlands
Dear Pieter,
Any interruption or lesion of the skin can be considered an ulcer. Survey methods of the diabetic literature can be adequately used for leprosy research. Recent studies from Bus SA, Waaijman R, Arts M and co-authors are recommended (Effect of custom-made footwear on foot ulcer recurrence in diabetes: a multicenter randomized controlled trial. Bus SA, Waaijman R, Arts M, de Haart M, Busch-Westbroek T, van Baal J, Nollet F. Diabetes Care. 2013 Dec;36(12):4109-16. doi: 10.2337/dc13-0996. Epub 2013 Oct 15). They use the most up to date methods known from the diabetic literature. I have used also diabetic related method during my PhD research in leprosy related foot problems. One can also use the so called ulcer free interval in case of recurrent ulcers on the same location. In the past also a foot ulcer registration form (FINU form) developed by Faber et al has been proposed and tested in leprosy patients. For more detailed information and references, one can contact me: slimmerik@hotmail.com
Yours sincerely
Erik Slim
