Ref.: (LML) Paediatric MDT treatment
From: David Lai, London, UK
Dear Pieter,
On a recent field visit, I have had requests from health workers about the availability of paediatric MDT syrup for cases under 9 years-old. They expressed a needs for MDT syrup for children under 9. The current practice is splitting tablets and estimating dosage. Although the WHO reports childhood cases account for 7.5% but the data is not stratified. Also, on actual field review, the children account for up to 15% with cases reported as young as 4.
My concern is whether there is indeed a need to push for more assessable paediatric MDT treatment and whether such paediatric preparation is cost-effective. I would appreciate any input from people working in the clinical setting whether there is in fact a need to push for paediatric MDT.
