Leprosy Mailing List – November 16, 2020
Ref.: (LML) info Hansen - second edition
From: Patrícia Deps, Espírito Santo, Brazil
Dear Pieter.
I would like to introduce to you the second edition of info Hansen.
This new edition addresses challenges presented by Hansen's disease in Brazil.
Highlights include an essay by Carmelita Coriolano, National Coordinator of the Hansen's Disease Control Program, and Ciro Gomes (University of Brasília), who discuss obstacles to the elimination of Hansen's disease in Brazil. Claudio Salgado (Federal University of Pará), currently President of the Brazilian Society of Hansen's Disease, analyses the prospect of the elimination of Hansen's disease from Brazil and the rest of the world.
Other Blog articles in the second edition include: the importance of chemoprophylaxis to interrupt the chain of transmission; underlying causes of Hansen's disease; biosecurity for health workers; Hansen's disease among immigrants; mental health and Hansen's disease; obstacles to the prevention of disabilities in the care of persons affected by Hansen's disease in Brazil; Hansen's disease as a zoonosis; the concept of One Health and Hansen's disease; and an innovative essay that poses a challenge to person-centred medicine by asking what (besides a bacillus) is transmitted in Hansen's disease.
New uploads to the info Hansen YouTube channel include Laila de Laguiche, President of the Alliance Against Leprosy, talking about educational and social projects for people affected by Hansen's disease, and a fascinating interview with psychologist Karla Dantas (MORHAN) about the difficulties of caring and being cared for. You can also listen to two veterans in the fight against Hansen's disease in Brazil - Clodis Tavares and Dora Cypreste.
The wide and varied content of the info Hansen website includes contributions from different countries, links to recent scientific articles, and access to an online Clinical Practice in Hansen's Disease book written and reviewed by experts in HD. Blog articles aim to disseminate new and exciting scientific, social and political ideas about Hansen's disease.
As a digital platform, info Hansen aims to disseminate what is being done in Brazil and the world to improve the lives of people affected by Hansen's disease, as well as new scientific findings and ethical reflections. In this way, communication channels with people from different parts of the world are opened. All information on info Hansen is published whenever possible in four languages: Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.
With thanks and best wishes,
Patrícia Deps
