Dear Pieter,
Quite opportune comments by Dr. J. Wilston. As mentioned before, pure neuritic leprosy and diabetic neuropathy are diseases that can co-exist. Confirmation of one does not rule out the other. Furthermore, standard leprosy and diabetes can co-exist. Misdiagnosis of Leprosy and Diabetes are not quite rare!
In both cases it is difficult to separate the results of the neuropathy even though its clinical presentations are quite specific for each of them, mainly in uncontrolled cases. My message is that, considering this dual condition, superimposed or not, we should expand interaction with Diabetic Foot care and research services to learn from their experiences and, furthermore, look for integration of leprosy cases into diabetic foot care services as a strategy to expand provision of care and to decrease stigma.
Marcos Virmond
