Leprosy Mailing List – March 4,  2021

Ref.:  (LML) Infolep monthly overview of new publications on leprosy - Mar '21

From:  Annemiek Akerboom, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Dear colleagues,

Breaking newsA new modeling study, published in PLoS NTDs, predicts that 40 million people require post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to reduce global leprosy new case detection by 90% in 22 years. The model estimates can be used by policymakers and program manager to develop long-term strategies to end leprosy. Get access to the full paper here.

Save the date - The sixth annual Spring Meeting organised by the Leprosy Research Initiative (LRI) will be held on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 April 2021 from 13:30 – 17:00 (CET). This year the event will take place online and is open to external participants. During this meeting, the progress and results of currently ongoing LRI funded research projects will be presented. Also, the meeting offers opportunities to virtually network with and learn from fellow researchers. More information will be provided on the LRI website in the coming weeks.

Call for action - The Leprosy Mission and effect:hope have co-organised a petition calling for the repeal of 130 discriminatory leprosy laws in 29 countries. The petition will be presented to the Human Rights Council in September, coinciding with Special Rapporteur Alice Cruz's presentation to the UN General Assembly. The petition calls on the UN to ensure that all Member States live up to the commitments they have made to international human rights conventions. Go here to make your voice heard and help eliminate the discrimination invoked by these laws.

GPZL Secretariat Director, Bill Gallo, spoke with Linord Moudou about leprosy and how transmission can be prevented. Watch the segment here and hear from persons affected by leprosy in Ethiopia about their experiences with the disease and the associated stigma.

Below you will find the list with new publications on leprosy and interesting events. Feel free to contact me to receive full-text versions if these cannot be found through the Infolep portal. Also, I would be happy to assist you with literature searches.

Warm regards,

Anniek Akerboom
