Leprosy Mailing List – December 6, 2015
Ref.: (LML) Draft WHO Leprosy Strategy 2016-2020
From: Howard Engels, Founex, Switserland
Dear Pieter,
I appreciated very much the recent post of Dr Revankar (LML, 3-12-2015) and the constructive points he raised.
As many others, I have followed with interest the ongoing discussion on improving/maintaining Leprosy Control activities globally. But, of course, as a retired basic scientist (microbiology/biochemistry/immunology), I certainly lack the in depth knowledge and skills of the various clinicians/leprologists participating on this mailing list.
However, I do observe that many/most of the issues raised and discussed have been around for the last 20 years or so and I personally would like to see a better consensus reached on the way forward. It is not easy but if we do not prioritize and move forward, (which will require some negotiation and compromises) we will still be discussing/debating the same (old) issues/concerns related to leprosy control and leprosy research in the year 2035!
Regards,
Howard Engers, PhD, retired
former Director AHRI, Addis Ababa,
former secretary IMMLEP SC, TDR/WHO Geneva
