Leprosy Mailing List – December 7, 2015
Ref.: (LML) Draft WHO Leprosy Strategy 2016-2020
From: Ben Naafs, Munnekeburen, the Netherlands
Dear Pieter,
Dr. Wim Theuvenet wrote in LML on December 2, 2015, that “the proposal to monitor nerve function monthly for at least 2 years after the start of the MDT is an utmost sensible one, but then the proper tools to effectively treat nerve function loss are unfortunately lacking. It is only a minority of the nerves with serious function loss and when treated with corticosteroids, etc., will recover to a functional level (protective sensation and muscle strength VMT grade 4 or 5).”
When nerve function deterioration is detected early, immunosuppression and or modulation with sometimes surgery can be of great benefit. The reason these actions are underestimated is most likely because the treatment is given too short or too much or completely wrong.
With regards,
Ben Naafs
