Dear Pieter,
The 6 doses shortened MDT treatment for all leprosy patients, called U-MDT, is now being implemented in Brazil despite all the contrary opinions from many different societies, institutions and associations, including the Brazilian Leprosy Society (SBH), that I am the current President, the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases (SBI), the Brazilian Academy of Neurology (ABN), the Brazilian Society of Clinical Medicine (SBCM), the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB), the Representatives of the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO), and of the National Counselor of Municipal Health Secretaries (CONASEMS), and the Coordinators of the leprosy National Reference Center at Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, and of the leprosy National Reference Center at Uberlândia, Minas Gerais.
We all believe there is not enough evidence to implement such a short scheme for all patients. Would you please publish our manifesto against the implementation of U-MDT on the LML?
