(LML) Single-dose rifampicin chemoprophylaxis

Leprosy Mailing List – June 16,  2018

Ref.:  (LML) Single-dose rifampicin chemoprophylaxis

From:  Francesca Gajete, Manila, Philippines

Dear Pieter,

Greetings from the National Leprosy Control Program,Philippines!

Finally, I have found fellow leprologists who shared the same sentiments. I am so very happy that we are now receiving mails related to our concerns:

1.  The importance of incorporating Leprosy in our curriculum not only for Medical and Nursing Students, Trainings Dermatology, Microbiology & Infectious Diseases & NTDs but also among grade school and high school students just like Tuberculosis, Dengue and Malaria. I wish June Nash could come up with a text book that would create more interest like the one she did on Health Education in Leprosy with Dr Luv Van Parijs. This was so long time ago, when we participated in crafting the handbook in Madras and Nepal.

2. The hype on...elimination.... WHO should revive the trainings of Health Workers thru Sasakawa Memorial Health Fdtn, ALM, TLMI, among others;

3. Use of Social Media in health promotion for leprosy.

This early we wish to inform our readers thru you and the LML that we are now in the middle of "pen planning" the hosting of Philippines of the 2Oth International Leprosy Conference (ILC), hopefully in Cebu. Originally planned to be held in Manila at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) as per request of Dr Yo Yuasa. It would have been a dream come true for us, too. In January 2007, it was at the PICC that the Philippine Declaration was crafted by 35 former leprosy patients in support of the Global Appeal presented to the UNCHR that same year. However, ILA ILEP officials its more appropriate that the ILC be held in Cebu, being a historical place for leprosy control and the birth of ILA.

We felt this topic on elimination, basic education in leprosy, Chemoprophylaxis particularly the use of Single dose RFM, role of dermatologists in leprosy education and control among others are good topics for discussions during the ILC.

Dr H Eggens and Dr Ben Naafs gave us, National Program Managers, a very good training in Shanghai some few years ago thru WPRO. However, most of us have either left the program or retired.

Hope you will be able to join us in Cebu come September 10-13, 2019.

Sincerely,

Ces
