Leprosy and sexual and reproductive health and rights

Leprosy Mailing List – April 10,  2013

Ref.:    (LML) Leprosy and sexual and reproductive health and rights

From:  Marloes Strengholt, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Dear Dr Schreuder,

From my supervisor, Wim van Brakel, I received your name and email address, as the editor of the Leprosy Mailing List. On behalf of the Netherlands Leprosy Relief I have developed an online survey to assess if attention is being paid to the sexual and reproductive health and rights by services for people affected by leprosy. To help gain responses, I want to ask you if you could distribute the following text.

Evidence shows that disability can have a profound impact on sexual and reproductive health of the people concerned. Very little is known about the sexual and reproductive health of people affected by leprosy and even less is known about what is done to make sexual and reproductive health services accessible to persons with disabilities or about services that address any specific needs they may have. Sexual and reproductive health is a human right under the UN Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

To help increase attention, we would like to make an inventory of what organizations and programmes are currently doing in this field. As most of you are working in leprosy and/or disability care programmes, we would like to invite you to take part in an online survey. Your participation is very valuable to us. Only in this way we can get a good overview of attention in this important area of work.

This online survey is conducted on behalf of the Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR). We would appreciate receiving your response at your earliest convenience. It is easy to participate in this survey: kindly click the link below and you can start straight away. It will take no more than 10 – 20 minutes.

The Netherlands Leprosy Relief intends to use the results of the survey to promote the sexual and reproductive health and rights of persons with a disability or affected by leprosy. The data you provide will only be used for this study and will not be provided to third parties. The data will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. The survey results will be anonymised and cannot be traced back to individual persons and/or organizations.  At the end of the survey form you can indicate whether you are interested to receive a copy of the survey report.

If you have any problems opening the survey link or if you have questions about the survey, please send an email to m.strengholt@leprastichting.nl.

Thank you very much for your participation!

Kind regards,

Marloes Strengholt

(on behalf of the Netherlands Leprosy Relief)
