New case detection

Leprosy Mailing List – April 3,  2013

Ref.:    (LML) New case detection

From:  Jaison Barreto, Bauru, Brazil

Dear Pieter

Despite the fall in the leprosy detection all over the world as well as in Brazil the past 8 years, I expect that we will see many new cases for a long time to come. The slides show a new leprosy patient case detected in Mato Grosso state recently. The patient is a 7 years old boy, borderline (BB-LLsp) leprosy,  with grade 2 disability, madarosis and burns caused by lack of sensitivity.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health is fighting hard against leprosy, mainly  the past 2 years. We are organizing activities in public schools, in order to find children with leprosy. Also, we are training health professionals in the field (see details in www.dahwmt.org.br).

All efforts to combat leprosy must be made, and leprosy should not be seen as a problem belonging to the past. Everybody is welcome: NGOs, Governments and Health Professionals should all work together.

Regards,
