Dear Dr Schreuder,

Greetings from Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh, Maharashtra, India!  I would like to share important news for the readers of the leprosy mailing list.

STATE ODISHA – INDIA, AMENDMENT IN DEROGATORY ACTS

The Federation of Leprosy Organizations (FOLO) has filed a written petition in Supreme Court of India in the year 2010, praying for change or suitable amendments in 16 derogatory Acts which are affecting the rights of leprosy affected persons.  In response to the petition, the Government of Odisha, in its legislative assembly (Winter Session) 2012 has amended the following derogatory Acts.  (Derogatory Provision - Leprosy affected persons were not allowed to contest the election in local Municipal Council or Panchayat.)

1.   The Orrisa Municipal Corporation Act, 1950

2.   The Municipal Corporation Act, 2003

3.   The Orrisa  Panchayat  Act, 1959; and

4.   The Orrisa Gram  Panchayat  Act, 1964

Now leprosy affected persons are eligible to contest the election to Municipal Council & local Panchayat in State of Odisha, India.

Best regards,
