Request of information

Leprosy Mailing List – December 28th, 2012

Ref.:    Request of information

From:  Nthabiseng Ntlama, Maseru, Lesotho

Dear Dr Noto,

My name is Mrs Nthabiseng Ntlama from Lesotho, National Leprosy Programme Manager and a nurse by profession.

1.

I am very much interested in the use of clofazimine for the management of type 2 leprosy reaction [or erythema nodosum leprosum reaction].  I therefore request for any documentation to fully understand its use.

2.

Secondly there was a presentation on the Diagnosis of Leprosy, which is now available on the web site of the International Leprosy Association.  In the section about "The 1st cardinal sign of leprosy" at page 11 is described "The sweat and histamine test".  My interest is on the use of histamine for confirmation of the leprosy bacillus and, I also would like to know if this could replace the slit-skin smear test or the smear still need to be done for confirmation of diagnosis.  May I again have full information on this issue?

I think the country will benefit from this information because we see patients in leprosy reactions, we haven't been doing slit-skin smear and there is no dermatologist to refer to for further management of leprosy patients.

Thank you in advance,

Ntlama
