From: ML W. de Oliveira, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Dear Salvatore,
I apologize for this late message, please circulate via the leprosy mailing list this communication regarding Dr. René Garrido Neves' death.
Warm regards,
MLeide

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to go back to Dr H. Srinivasan´s message regarding various preeminent leprologists, who had already passed away.  This is another usefulness of the LML list: to make possible interchange feelings, historical registers and contact among many colleagues, some of them retired but not inactive as my dear Dr.Srinivasan.

One of my significant experiences was the project of Oral History which allows me to interview masters like Drs Opromolla, Bechelli, Rotberg and record their lives (www.coc.fiocruz.br).

I take this opportunity to notify that an important Brazilian leprologist, Dr. René Garrido Neves also passed away last month.  Taking Dr Srinivasan´s words concerning his relationship with Dr. CK Job, I was extremely fortunate that I was Dr René student at the beginning of my career.  At that time he was responsible for all histopathology exams in the Institute of Leprology, the main reference center of Leprosy in Brazil, located in RJ (1935-1977) where countless students learned leprosy at that time.

Due to Federal Government reform, this institution was almost bankrupt and only some sectors were transferred to FIOCRUZ.  Dr René faced this very arrogant change in a military dictator era and I stayed on his side, as her fellow.  He moved to another institution and I lost my fellow and my future career in FIOCRUZ Foundation.  But I learned that we have to be honest and ethical  in some decisions and attitudes in our professional  lives.

The leprosy sector in FIOCRUZ needed almost 15 years to be rebuilt and today it is the main leprosy research institution in Brazil.  I am very proud that I could give some contribution to this when I worked in the Brazilian Health Ministry, motivated from my previous experience.

Dr René was also one of those responsible for the maintenance of the Brazilian Leprology Society and gave important support during the multi-drug therapy (MDT) implementation in Brazil as a member of Scientific Committee of National Hansen´s Disease Program.

He joined Dr Sinesio Talhari and created an itinerant course of prevalent infectious skin disease, for two decades, in addition to important books on this subject.  He was known to be a very friendly professor and his good sense of humor was one of his virtues.  His interview was also recorded and his lessons spread for all Brazil.
